此繫列叢書與顧力行、英亞東主編的《中國跨文
化傳播研究年刊（2017）（英文版）》所代表的在中
國模式下的“跨文化交際”所涉及的“領域”是從
1960年代和70年代的幾個發展階段演變而來的。正如
本卷指出，跨文化領域受過眾多人的影響，其中最具
影響力的便是Fred Casmir。Casmir與Michael
Prosser（這卷書獻給的人），皆旨在尋求或發現有
助於加強跨文化學者在領域內發展的有效方法。
Casmir和Prosser都來自美國言論協會的“言語交流
”圈。早在1967年ASS於田納西州的孟菲斯舉辦的“
與外國大學的合作委員會”會議中，二人就已經開始
討論如何成立一個跨文化領域。這些議題在第二年的
德國海德堡舉行的“Pepperdine Haus”的小型會議
上被提出。此次會議為Prosser在1971組織的美國/加
拿大聯合語音通訊協會提供了擬定正式計劃的條件。
其中一項建議便是舉行年度學術會。本書評估並反映
了我們40多年裡在該領域的摸索與探究，尤其是研究
了中國傳播背景下跨文化交際的歷史、發展與現狀。
本卷通過選用代表學者的重要文章，來介紹中國跨文
化領域的“根源，研究與相關性”。
