《大學英語閱讀新教程》是根據《大學英語課程教學要求》，針對目前大學生因缺乏閱讀技巧而造成閱讀效率普遍低下的現實，結合大學英語四、六級考試最新題型編寫的教材，旨在提高大學生的英語綜合閱讀能力。其編寫特色如下：
一、注重選材的真實性和時效性
所選材料來自近期英美主流報刊雜志上“原汁原味”的原版語料，語言規範。主題涉及學生學習和生活、當前人類社會普遍關注的熱點問題等，具有一定的現實意義。這些閱讀材料不但能幫助學生獲取知識、拓寬視野，而且有助於培養學生的批判性思維能力。
二、突出閱讀技能的培養
遵循skill一oriented的編寫原則，均以閱讀微技能為標題，便於查找所需技能，使學生能充分運用有效的閱讀技能更好地理解文章。各微技能的編排由淺入深，第1冊主要介紹最基本的閱讀技巧，如快速查找信息、區分文章細節等；第2冊強調深層閱讀技巧，如判斷句子之間的關繫、理解文章的組成結構、判斷作者的態度、區分事實和觀點、批判式閱讀等。這種螺旋式上升的編排方式便於學生各項技能的逐層建構和綜合運用能力的逐步發展。
三、兼顧考與學的需求
閱讀選材和練習設計一方面遵照《大學英語課程教學要求》中的閱讀要求，另一方面參照全國大學英語四、六級考試的最新題型，力求讓學生通過本教材的學習，熟悉並了解四、六級考試模式，掌握應試技巧，檢測自己的閱讀水平。
四、課堂教學和自主學習相結合
本教材既可作為課堂教學教材使用，也可作為學生課外自主學習的資源選擇。
