王建國是東南大學1978屆本科生，1985年免試攻讀我的博士生。他學習刻苦努力、善於分析，先後跟我參加過河南博物院設計和冰心文學館的建築設計，此二項作品均得到好評並先後獲得大獎。此外，他還參加和主持了常熟市政府人大和政協樓的設計，表現出相當的設計水平。
城市設計是城市規劃的重要組成部分，是城市建設的重要環節，對城市建設起到指導和控制作用。
1985年，在王建國讀齊康的博士生期間，我將他的研究方向定位於城市設計，他的博士論文的題目為《現代城市設計理論和方法研究》，後不斷完善，出版了《現代城市設計理論和方法》和《城市設計》並被不少高校選用作為教材，十餘次重印而且還獲得出版方面的圖書獎。《傳承與探新（王建國城市和建築設計研究成果選）》就是他的另一個研究成果。

《傳承與探新（王建國城市和建築設計研究成果 選）》架構分論述和案例研究兩部分。論述部分按照 綜論、傳承和探新三方面組織，反應了作者 近三十多年來學術思想的成長過程。案例研究部分分 為城市設計、建築設計兩部分，其組織和遴選 主要從其是否具有研究意義和價值的角度來安排。 王建國的《傳承與探新（王建國城市和建築設計 研究成果選）》全書涵蓋理論研究與案例實踐，圖文 並茂，適合 於建築設計、城市設計、城市規劃等專業設計人員及 其相關領域的人士閱讀。
